How to clean a bug zapper tray and grid safely
A clogged grid is a weak grid. Five minutes every week or two in high season keeps the spark sharp.
Step one: power off and wait
Unplug the lantern and give it five minutes. The grid holds a charge for a short while after the plug comes out; patience is the safety step.
Step two: twist off the tray
Turn the base tray counter-clockwise and lift it away. Tip it into the bin, outside, downwind.
Step three: brush, don't wash
Use the supplied brush on the grid bars, top to bottom, so debris falls out through the open base. Never hose the lantern down and never use a wet cloth on the grid.
Step four: check the lamp
While the tray is off, look at the tube ends. Grey or dark ends and a pale glow mean it's time for a fresh 15 W bulb.
How often
Every week or two in midsummer, monthly in spring and autumn. If the tray fills overnight, clean more often.
