A bug zapper outdoor works on a simple bargain. A UV lamp glowing at 365 nanometres draws night-flying insects toward it; a high-voltage electric grid around the lamp stops them on contact. We built every GOOTOP lantern around that bargain and nothing else: a 15 W twin-tube lamp, a 4,200-volt grid, a black ABS shell with guard bars, and a twist-off tray that catches what falls. No sprays, no attractant cartridges, no smoke drifting across the table.
The Zap T6 Pro is our full-size mosquito zapper and fly zapper for open ground. At 7.5 by 6.7 inches and a foot tall it throws a wide glow over decks, lawns, pool aprons, barn aisles and garage doors, with reach of up to half an acre. The JY-02 keeps the same voltage in a 5.9-inch body for balconies, porches, camper awnings and indoor corners, running on ordinary 90-130 V household power through a grounded 3-prong plug.
Placement matters more than wattage. Hang an electric bug zapper ten to twenty feet from where people sit, a little above head height, and between the dark edge of the yard and the table, so the insects fly toward the light and away from you. Switch it on at dusk; flyers are busiest from sunset to around midnight. Mosquitoes answer to breath and warmth as much as to light, so a zapper thins them rather than erasing them, while gnats, midges, moths and flies take the lure readily.
Upkeep is short. Empty the tray and brush the grid every week or two in high season, keep the lantern under cover from direct rain, and fit a fresh 15 W replacement bulb once the glow turns pale or the catch drops. Our 4-pin U-shaped tubes fit the Zap T6 Pro, K15, T9 and X3, so the lantern on your hook can keep its pull for many summers.
